TYPES OF TREES

Fir Balsam

Fir Balsam is the tree most associated with Christmas in NH due to its smell and its softer branches.

Fraser Fir

Fraser Fir is known for its strong branches and also for its traditional Christmas tree appearance.

Fralsam Fir

Fralsam Fir is a hybrid developed by Weir Christmas Tree Farm in northern New Hampshire. It tends to have many positive features of our other fir trees and has dense needles.

Canaan Fir

Canaan Fir also has strong branches and a milder smell. The needles are often a rich shade of green.

White Spruce

White Spruce is characterized by its strong needles that hold ornaments easily. The needles can appear blue-green.

Tree care

Here are some tips for anyone who decides to have a Christmas tree cut from our farm or from any farm or stand.

Many people like to saw an inch or so off the bottom of their tree before bringing it in to put in the stand to help absorption.

Trees need to be set in water and the water needs to be checked regularly once a tree is set up in a home. They can absorb the water quickly depending on the tree and the temperature in your home. Keep your tree away from a heat source as it can dry the needles. If you decide to leave your tree outside until you are ready to bring it in it will be fine - especially if it is cold. If for some reason there is a warm spell you can stick it in a bucket of water.

Lastly, give your tree a good shake before bringing it inside. It helps with clean up!

History

Manson and Fay Donaghey began selling Christmas trees in 1980. It was a dream they had which they were able to turn into a reality. They worked as a team, the work was more than most people do in their retirement but they loved the beauty of the land.

In addition, their children and grandchildren gathered at the farm each year to plant than later sell the trees. It was a family venture filled with hard work and love. Fay passed away in 1997 and Manson in 2021, but Gary and Sue Seidner, Manson and Fay’s daughter, have taken over running the business with support from the family.

Gary worked side by side with Manson and Fay to learn the business and had taken over much of the daily work. Our parents would be so proud that we continue the tree farm and that we treasure the land. It is in their names that we strive to maintain the quality of our products, especially our trees. Thank you for helping us carry on our family tradition.

In 2022, Sue and Gary assumed ownership of Donaghey Tree Farm to continue the family tradition.
